Several friends encouraged us to visit Cody, especially the Buffalo Bill Cultural Center located there. Our 12th stop (9/24 - 9/26) we stayed at the Ponderosa Campground in Cody www.codyponderosa.com. This campground was located a short three blocks from the museums we wanted to visit. While staying here a cold, wet weather front moved in so rather than try and drive in potential snow and heavy rains we stayed a day longer than we had originally planned.
The Buffalo Bill Cultural Center of the West www.centerofthewest.org is actually five museums within one building complex. The Buffalo Bill Museum chronicles the life and accomplishments of Buffalo Bill Cody in great detail. The Draper Natural History Museum, the Whitney Western Art Museum, the Cody Firearms Museum and the Plains Indian Museum are all contained within this complex. Your ticket is good for two days because it takes you that long to see all the exhibits. A definite must for anyone traveling through this part of the country!!
Downtown Cody is filled with typical stores and shops. We were told that a "must" place to see was the Irma Hotel. Buffalo built this hotel and named it after his daughter Irma. Buffalo Bill took his wild west show on tour and traveled to the U.K. While there he performed for Queen Victoria and her family. She was so impressed by the show, as a token of her gratitude, she had a beautiful Victorian cherry bar built and shipped to Cody. This bar is in the Irma Hotel.
Boji continues to enjoy meeting new people! The people we have encountered have been very friendly and helpful...most of the time.
We enjoyed our stay in beautiful Cody, Wyoming. On to Thermopolis, Wyoming and warmer weather.
